professional experience

In 2014 I got my masters in Civil Engineering and started working in WSP.
I have 5+ years of experience in Highway Design. At WSP, I am in charge of the geometrical design of linear works, coordination of projects and checking in with clients. We especialize in big infrastructures in the USA such as highway I-77 and I-66 in Texas.

In 2019 I was selected to be part of WSP program "Future Ready". This program allows me to seek new business opportunities for WSP that involve new technologies and implementing digital transformation practices.

This website is aimed to my entrepeneurial side, so feel free to check out my Linkedin profile if you'd like to know more about my Civil Engineering career :)

entrepeneurship and digital experience

πŸŽ“ 2013- 2014 πŸŽ“

I've been interested in businesses and entrepeneurship since college.
In 2013, the University of Cantabria and Banco Santander created an entrepeneurial program called e2: "estudiante x emprendedor" which I signed up to.

e2 created multidisciplinary teams of 5 students with one leader with the goal of developing a business idea, creating its business model and presenting it to investors. I was assigned to be the leader of one of those teams.

Our team's project was Denube, a premium rainwater brand. I persuaded AD+D's CEO (a reputable creative studio that works for brands like Fontvella and Lindt), to design our packaging and branding, and I succeded!

Even though Denube looked great thanks do AD+D, the project didn't take off but I learnt many things along the way.

What did I learn during these years?

  • Lean startup, business models and design thinking from e2 EOI Madrid classes

  • Finding compatible cofounders and working in teams is hard. Alignment is key

πŸ’΅ 2014 -16' πŸ’΅

During these years I started my professional career as a Highway Engineer at WSP. I was learning a lot about construction but my entrepeneurial side was unsatisfied.

I wanted to make money online and decided to learn everything about it. I listened to every podcast, read every business book and marketing blog. I ended up trying stereotypical 'make money online' businesses such as domaining (failed terribly) or Amazon - Ebay International Dropshipping (extremelly boring).

Not my real first dollar online :)

Some customers reviews from my dropshipping times

Anyway, I managed to make my first euros online, which proved I was capable of making money for myself. I also became very interested in investing, creating mutiple revenue streams and finantial independence during this time.

What did I learn during these years?

  • Hey Carmen, you can make money online!

  • But next time... try to start a business where you can provide a diferential value to customers. Don't just compete for the best price.

πŸ“ˆ 2016 -19' πŸ“ˆ

After my first attempts making money online, I discovered affiliate marketing. I thought this was a great opportunity for creating more passive streams of revenue plus I could learn how to create websites.

And so, I began creating Wordpress sites. I signed up for the Amazon Affiliate program and started creating content, which led me to learn about Digital Marketing, especially, SEO since my goal was to attract organic traffic and redirect it to Amazon.

I discovered that I liked creating strategies for my websites and analyzing my competitors. Promoting other people's products was not motivating for me though, I wanted to help users and create value for them.

Not my real first dollar online :)

Besides learning how to create Wordpress website, I started taking online courses on Web Development (HTML, CSS and Javascript). I thought I would need those skills if I wanted to eventually build my own ideas. Freecodecamp and Udemy were great places to learn.

In 2018 I also attended a executive program on Big Data & Business Analytics by Escuela de OrganizaciΓ³n Industrial de Madrid. Where I reinforced my knowledge on Lean Startup, businesses and Agile methodologies and learnt the basics of Data Analytics and Machine Learning.

In 2019, I sold my websites. This was really empowering, I realized I could create valuable assets not only for me, but also to other people.

What did I learn during these years?

  • I can create and sell valuable assets!

  • I want to create my own products. Turn my ideas into businesses.

  • Web Development, Wordpress, Digital Marketing and Data Analytics.

What I'm doing now

HALFWAY FLIGHTS

I am always coming up with new ideas. Ever since 2014, I keep a notebook where I write most of them, some are a little silly but some other I'm sure would be succesulf if built.

After my previous experiences, I thought it was about time for me to create my own digital product.

I had always had this problem of travelling with my friends. We all live in different cities and finding the right combination of flights is a pain.

Besides, after booking flights the whole 'booking accomodation, finding activities and share expenses" issues start. Nobody wants to be in charge of the trip organization and disagreements arise.

What if there was a place that did all the group must-haves for you?
Well, I'm building it, it's Halfway Flights.

Halfway Flights

After learning the basics of web development, I'm fighting to create the MVP of Halfway Flights. This will be a website where you can:
Find the best combination of flights given several origin airports and datesSuggest accomodation for the groupSuggest activities (tours, sightseeing, restaurants) for you trip
Halway Flights' MVP will provide with the very basics for every trip in one click: transportation, accomodation and amentities.

Halfway Flights is aimed to travellers who have loved ones overseas and usually meet them somewhere around the world, such as:
Long-distance couplesExpats and digital nomadsInternational students
The MVP is still in the making and has some bugs, but you can check it out here.
I aim to test if there is demand for this product withouth investing large amount of time or money.
If it suceeds, a full travel group management app could be designed with more features like expense and photo sharing, centralized booking data or real-time suggestions on activities. It could be the TravelPerk of friends and family trips.

What am I learning?

  • It is hard to keep mometum if you work alone.

  • Having a experienced mentour would be helpful.

  • I'd like to share my journey with like-minded entrepeneurs.

  • Self-discovery. Being aware of my strengths and weaknesses to make the best out of them.
